Still Life: A Method for Mastery

A PROVEN STEP BY STEP, PROCESS FOR MASTERING STILL LIFE PAINTING

I'll take you step by step through creating this still life

Too often, the painting process is unnecessarily painful:

  • You try to do everything at once, resulting in panicking and rushing
  • Focusing on detail too soon means losing the big picture...
  • ..so the painting looks wrong and it's hard to figure out why
  • Confused values and poor colour mixing kill the realism

But there are simple answers to these problems:

  • Simplifying the process into manageable steps
  • Simplifying the composition right at the start with clear light and shadow shapes
  • Accurate value design of the big shapes
  • A clear approach to accurate colour mixing

FAQs

Can I watch any time?

Yes. Both live sessions will be recorded. You will then have lifetime access to them, together with all the other videos and materials.

When does it start?

The first live session will be on Monday, 27th February. The second session a week after that. Sessions start at 6PM UK time (1PM Eastern, 100AM Pacific) and last for two to three hours. We have a ten to fifteen minute break every hour.

How long is the course?

After the live sessions have finished, a further recorded video will be added showing the finish of the piece, so around three weeks in all.

What materials will I need?

I'll be recommending a specific set of oil paints for you to use. You can use your own of course, but you'll probably get closer to the mixes I'll be showing you if you use the same ones. It's not a huge list. You'll also need brushes - mostly your own choice here - and linseed oil and a solvent. One 9 x 12 Ampersand Gessobord panel too.

Is Munsell involved?

The only requirement is a $10 Munsell value scale (which you can get here). If you do have a version of the Munsell book, I will be giving Munsell numbers for the colours, but it's not required.
