Foundations of Form

Giving you a solid foundation in drawing form so you can move on confidently with your painting

Does this sound like you?

  • You know, in your heart of hearts, that not having strong drawing and value skills is holding you back.
  • You're probably meaning to get to developing the foundation skills you know you need but never quite getting round to it.
  • Because it's boring! Who wants to sit doing Bargue drawings and spheres on their own all day?
  • And how do you know where to start anyway?
  • And even if you get started with it, it's SO hard to keep it going on your own long enough to make a difference.

Imagine if it was like this, though:

  • knowing what to do next to make the most progress
  • having a clear structure to work to that makes it easy to get started
  • having a friend in your corner reminding you to stick with it every now and again
  • seeing the results in some finished work of your own

This is the Foundations of Form Program

A three month drawing and painting value and form course, limited to a small group of people, that will help you develop the strong foundation you need so you can move forward (without boring you to tears)

Got a Question?

If you have any questions, just drop me a line over email or message me on Facebook!

What medium will we be using?

Pencil, charcoal and oil paint - but in value only of course. For the dry media, good quality sketch pad paper will be fine. Ampersand panels or good quality oil painting paper for the oils.

When will the live sessions be?

This will be a little flexible, but usually once every two weeks, at 6PM UK time (2PM Eastern, 10AM Pacific).

What will happen when I sign up?

You'll have three weeks to get the materials list together, and in that time I'll have a quick one-to-one with you to understand better where you want to go with your work. You'll get your first practice plan after we start. Everyone will be working on the same things to begin with, the plans will become more personalised to your needs as we go through the course.

How long is the course?

Three months from when we start.

Will Munsell be involved?

Yes! We'll be using the Munsell value scale throughout the course, so at a minimum you'll need a Munsell value scale (you can get one for only $10 though).

How much time per week will I need to put aside for this?

The practice plans will be 15 to 30 minutes a day, to begin with, and there will be drawing and painting projects extra to that - they will be done more at your own pace.

How will the group and one-to-one critique chats be done?

These will be zoom calls. The group chats and critique sessions are very informal and fun! There is also a lot of support and bonding on these calls. We do cover serious critique as well, both strengths and things that can be improved, with ideas on how to go about it. My goal is for you to leave each session with a clearer direction of where you need to head next.
