A six-week workshop that will show you how to use full colour and glazing over a soft, expressive value block in to create paintings with depth and life
(press play on the video)
The approach you taught in this workshop has given me the ability to work accurately AND freely at the same time. I honestly never imagined it would be possible to feel this level of comfort and control, certainly not without many more years of practice
— Cathy Forrest
The modelling factors (and their values) that you need to understand in order to create realistic form - and how to paint them
An approach that lets you avoid focusing on detail too early, overworking and keeps your focus on the "big picture" throughout
How (and when) to use opaque paint and glazes to create depth and realism, and how to use texture to give a painting life
How to start a painting with a strong design of light and shadow shapes - and keep it right through to the finish
Create a stronger impression of reality and visual depth and paint more expressively with softer edges
I learned in-depth knowledge about values and composition, and even more than I expected about other aspects of painting
— Cynthia Cockriel

- Jacqueline Henard
I had some real breakthrough moments and had a lot of fun. What more can you ask for!?
- Cathy Forrest
Sorry, this workshop is now closed for registration
I've never had a class like this and it was more helpful than I can say!
— Peach McCombe
Are the live sessions recorded?
Yes. They're immediately available for you to watch any time you like, and you have access to them as long as you like (even after the workshop finishes)
What medium will we be using?
Oils on panel. I recommend Ampersand Gessobord panels, with a medium of linseed oil and a solvent. If you can, it's a good idea to prepare the panels first to reduce their absorbency - details will be in the materials list. If you want to use oil painting paper that's fine, but you must prepare it first with extra coats of acrylic gesso, or it will very likely be far too absorbent to use for multi-layer painting
When will the live sessions be?
On Mondays at 6PM UK time (2PM Eastern, 10AM Pacific). Usually 2 to 3 hours long (with breaks for teas and biscuits on the hour. Bring your own tea and buiscuits :D )
What will happen when I sign up?
You'll have some time to get the materials list together, which you'll have immedate access to. I'll then inform you by email when the first live session will be. You'll also get an invite to the community group. You'll be able to see the first pieces of content added to the main course site too.
I'll also send you a few resources and practice exercise videos for you to warm up with!
When does it start?
The first live session is planned for Monday, December 12th. I'll let you know with plenty of notice if that should change for any reason.
Will Munsell be involved?
Yes, of course! At a minimum you'll need a Munsell value scale (you can get one for only $10 though, I'll send you a link).
I'm looking into providing digital versions of the colours we use so a Munsell book is not strictly necessary. I haven't finalised this yet, but if it works out there will a small additional charge - it will still be significantly cheaper than any of the Munsell books though.
If you do want to get a physical book, the Student Munsell Colour Set (which includes a set of Munsell colour chips) is about $100
